Motorola is derived from "motor" and "Victrola." The company was formed to produce the first car radio that operated without interference from the car's electrical system.

hup / hep / hip: These words have existed since at least the turn of the last century. 'Hup' originally referred to the cadance of a marching band, i.e., hup, two, three, four. Thus associated with music, it became 'hep' during the swing era, when it became 'cool' to use it to refer to happenin' dudes and dudettes. In the 60s, when it became 'hip' to be cool, the beatniks popularized the term.

The modern toilet was engineered (not invented) by Thomas Crapper, thus the slang word "crap."

loo, British slang for bathroom, is from 'garde loo,' an Anglicization of the Norman 'garde lo,' which means 'Watch out' (for the waste water that people would throw out of second floors into the street).

Chicharron - fried pork skin. Richard Marin's parents thought he looked like this when he was a baby, thus the nickname "Cheech."
