Did you come to this page because you're looking for help?
So am I! What a coincidence! But this is my help page.
If you need help with something about this site in particular
(or anything in general), e-mail me.

I'm in the process of formulating questions I need answers to.
Nothing so serious as, e.g., the meaning of life, or anything.
Mostly code questions. Really, this is a "frustrations" page.
I'm dumping all my irritations here. But if you have answers
or suggestions, I would be most grateful.

"...enamel clocks are ticking..."
Hey, would ya happen to know a Roy Harper song (I think it was by Roy) with the lyrics "...enamel clocks are ticking..." and "...the number of fireflies that light up the highway at night, that make all the piney woods bright out in the county"? I've been looking for this song for years now, but I can't find it.

Page jump on menu page.
Take a look at the code for the menu page. (../A_menu.html)
The page jump (a name="start") will not work. Why?
The exact same structure works just fine (although sometimes
intermittently) on the cover. What am I doing wrong here?
Never mind. I figured it out. Not enough room at the bottom of the page. Duh.

Textbox in Netscape 4.7
How can I code a textform so that Netscape 4.7 will see it? I used to have a textbox on the cover that held the notes. In IE, it looked great, but in Netscape the text was rendered from margin to margin with code included. Was I doing something wrong, or is that just the way it has to be?
Again, never mind. It's fast becoming a moot point.

Resource(s) for writing good cross-browser code
Does anyone know a good resource (or several) where I can learn how to code my pages to be compatible with all major browsers?

Javascript for e-mail in IE
Is there a way to permit visitors using Internet Explorer to send e-mail via their own e-mail client using forms? I can get e-mail forms to work in Netscape, but not in IE.

How can I increase traffic to this site without resorting to lame link-exchanges or other crass forms of commercialism?

With my new host, I now have the capability of adding CGI scripts. Anyone know of a good mailing list script I can use?

Site appearance
In general, how does my site look? I'd appreciate any input, both re how it appears in your browser and re its "artistic" or "esthetic" qualities. Suggestions for changes are always welcome.

What's the meaning of life?
Just kidding. I threw that in for a little bit of humor. You can answer it, though, if you wish.

All right. I give up. When DO you use GIFs and when do you use JPEGs? I've read this statement in three separate sources recently (one of them was I-Digest), but none of them explained the difference. Could someone please enlighten a fledgling webmaster?
Never mind. As it happens, often, as soon as I posted this, I got a weekly e-mail from html tutor that answered it. The answer.

Back-up Insecurity. This is a post to the I-Winsoft newsletter asking for advice and resources related to backing up my files. I got a few answers that helped a bit, but I still haven't resolved the major issues here.
I've religiously backed up my files since ever since I got my first computer so many years ago, but just recently I've realized that since I got my newest system [Compaq Presario 7470, 550MHz, 320M RAM, Windows 98SE, 20M hard drive] I might not be so well backed-up as I've thought. I'd like to know if anyone has any insights/suggestions re the following:

1) I've been backing up to CD-RWs and assuming that these are readable on any system, but apparently they are only specific to the system on which they are made. Is this true, and if it is, does anyone know of any utilities that will "unlock" and extract the data on different systems? I'm afraid that, if I have a system malfunction, I will lose the data forever, which would be a catastrophe for me.

2) Is this data on CD-RWs recoverable if the hard drive ever has to be reformatted?

3) I've been using my old computer [Leading Edge, 486SX, 4M RAM, 215M hard drive] as a second system. Most of my new files, however, are in the newer MSWorks 2000 format, which the older MSWorks won't read. So, even if I could, in the event of a catastrophe, manage to get the files transferred to the old system, the only program I use that is common to both systems is Lotus Write. I COULD do ALL of my work on this app. It has a lot of features that I like. But the big drawback is that it doesn't have a spelling and grammar checker. (This is the main reason I use Works 2000. Otherwise, I'd rather use Lotus.) Is there a strategy or utility I can use that gets around cutting, pasting, and reformatting text, if I would use Lotus, but spell and grammar check in Works? Or is there some other app (preferably freeware or cheap) that I can use that will do a spelling and grammar check and be installable on my 486?

4) If I did use Lotus and I couldn't resolve the CD-RW issue, does anyone know of a way I could more easily and efficiently save backups to floppies, since that's the way I'd have to transfer data to the old system--unless I can get the old Reveal CD working again and archive the data on CD-Rs? (The old drive currently will not read anything. Maybe a bad connection.) Like, could I network the two computers? Or install a ZIP drive in each? Or transfer data via one of those new portable digital storage systems? Or what?

I hope someone has some suggestions that lead me in a different direction. I feel very insecure right now with over 300M of text files of my personal work that could be lost forever.
