FREEWARE Winscheduler-1.0b (1.19M) This is the same program as Macro Angel (see below), except that it doesn't have a 30 day trial. But, it has a bug that doesn't allow the icons in the task bar to show for every program that's opened after it is. The programs are still running and you can get to them by minimizing all the other programs, but if you minimize the program without the task bar icon showing, you can't get back to it unless you close all of the other programs. Pain in the ass.

FREEWARE Pop-up v3 (662K) I DLd this a long time ago, but I haven't got around to installing it until just today. This program generates a neat little Javascript pop-up menu that has a lot of clever options, like scrolling down with the page, staying invisible until you click it, and lots, lots more. It's very versatile. I wanted to use it on this site in place of frames, to include it on every page, but it has one major flaw: If you want to change it, you have to start all over from scratch. You can't edit the menu in the program once you've generated it. I tried editing the code, but it's too complicated. It'd be easier just to redo the whole thing. But if you're looking for a simple menu that's easy to redo from scratch, or if you want a long permanent one, this is a great program to make it with. There are lots and lots of other good menus and other stuff at this site.

FREEWARE Blog 5.0 (2.56M) This is the program that I'm using for this weblog. (All previous dates are copied from the old weblogs that I used to code in an html editor.) It's not too easy to understand how to use by following the help file, but once you figure it out, it's great. (I had a whole lot of problems trying to understand how set up multiple weblogs--but that may have been just me being dense). The blog page html is fully customizable. You can set up your blog page(s) to update directly to your site, or you can update them on your computer and upload them yourself. The big advantage here is that there is no need for undependable online services such as with Blogger or similar programs. This is "careware." (If you care, you can make a donation.) [One little quirk I've found in the program: if I post to dates not in the current month, I can't get it to copy the posts to the archive files unless I set my system clock back to the month that the post is in.]

FREEWARE MyWebServer 1.0.2 (240K) I was looking for software that would simulate a webserver offline, especially a CGI bin and SSI, so that I can play around with and test these functions on my computer offline before uploading them. And this one can do it all. But you have to be online to use it. Too bad. But it's a great program. It has everything, which is kind of amazing for how small it is. And the online documentation (all 1.7M of which I DLd as html files) is very thorough and extensive. A good deal for the price (free).

MP3s Creeker I really like this band. They're musically solid, although most of the songs I DLd sounded pretty much the same, with the same driving beat. (There were a few exceptions.) But they have a lyrical depth that's missing in lot of the bands that become super-popular these days. I DLd all 15 of the songs available [Look also at their page on mp3.com for a few more. Or get them all from there. The one I like best is "Head Everyday." Guess what that's about. I'm going to burn these songs to CD. It'll make great car music, driving down the road with the windows down and cool music blasting. Great way to attract attention. [It see, as I run a check on my links with Link Sleuth, that mp3.com is redirecting the URL from Creeker's page to it's home page, so you'll have to search the mp3 site for them if you want to DL these files from there.]

TRIALWARE Macro Angel 1.2 (2.2 Mb) "Macro Angel introduces several ways to save time by eliminating repetitive actions and simplifying complex tasks into one step. You can assign repetitive tasks to a single keystroke and also have MacroAngel perform tasks for you automatically when some specified events occur. Macro Angel allows you to build custom automated tasks such as file backups, FTP and HTTP downloads and uploads, file copy, move and much more. You can create complex tasks, using a combination of various elements including user input, keystroke input and more. The program also supports automated ZIP archiving. A task wizards will guide you through the creation process, so no programming experience is required."

This is a useful program, but it's kind of tough to figure out. It's not very intuitive, and you have to play around with it a lot before you learn how to use it properly. And what's even worse, it ties up a lot of memory. My system only shows a 2% decline in resources when I start up the program, but as I use it, resources decrease fast. And when it's closed, it frees up between 10 and as much as 40%. I'm using this as a single step auto backup to different folders with different file extentions for the same file (.wps & .rtf). It's very useful, but I'm worrying if I'm going to be crashing my system if I leave it running for too long. There's a lot of other things that can be done with it too, but just this backup function alone is worth the trouble (four hrs total set-up and learning time) I had to go to to get it running. Also, this is a 30 day trial, so I'm wondering if it's going to be non-functional after 30 days, or if it'll keep on running, or if I can "cheat "it . Actually, if it works well for me and it's cheap enough, I might even pay for it. [The program stopped working after five days, and a notice on the start page said it had been run for 30 days, and no matter what I tried, even deleting all registry references and reinstalling it, I couldn't get it to run again. Not very promising.]

News blurb from Miami.com: "The Detroit-based recording star [eminem], a favorite target of Lynne Cheney in her criticism of the recording industry, unleashes the offensive word against her on the 'White America' track to his soon-to-be released LP, 'The Eminem Show.' ... But the yet-to-be-released track...is drawing headlines. In it, Eminem declares: 'F--- you, Miss Cheney!...with the freeness of speech this Divided States of Embarrassment will allow you to have."

So I DLd "White America." Must have been a different version than the one reported on above. No "Fuck you, Miss Cheney" etc. in it. Too bad. I'll have to keep looking. Then I went ahead and DLd a few other eminem songs: "The Kids" and "Tonite." Eminem is fast becoming the premier satirist of the new millennium. Catch up, kiddies, if you don't already know it. Good arguments against Cheney's POV here.
[I found the song that referred to Mrs. Cheney and DLd it.. It's "Without Me." Actually, it's the one they've been playing on MTV with eminem dressed up like Osama bin Laden.]

FREEWARE WritingWiz 1.5 (1.05M) I was looking for a spelling and grammar checker, so I DLd this, thinking that's what it was. But it's not. It's lame little toy that gives you a brief description and usage for individual words entered. Kind of juvenile. Anyone know of a good freeware spelling and grammar checker, please e-mail me.

FREEWARE WinMX 3.1 (680K) This is far better than the new Morpheus, and even better than the old Napster. It runs as fast as the old Morpheus and lets you control a lot more variables, like Napster used to. And it works well on 56K. I haven't tried all the other file sharing software yet. I guess I'm gonna have to DL them all and see which ones work the best on my system.

The Complete Guide to Weblogs & The Weblog Tool Roundup If you want to get seriously into weblogging, here's the places to go. If you're not already familiar with this stuff, prepare to be overwhelmed. I am. Be warned. You're going to have to choose.

MP3s lobsterjesus This is definitely some unusual music. Entertaining and often hilarious. The Website describes it as "the finest in Ambient Kitsch." It certainly is. You gotta hear it to appreciate it. A large number of free mp3s. [update: redesigned Website. Looks really good.]

MP3s Great Mutant Skywheel These guys are fantastic. DL their free mp3s. They're all great. Kind of a funky soul/head music. George Clinton meets The Moody Blues, but more modern, with maybe just a touch of The Cranberries thrown in. Actually, they're sort of indescribable.

MP3s Insomnia Theme Here's a link from the Comedy Central Website that'll DL Bobby Golden's thirty second theme song of Dave Atell's Insomnia show. I like this. I wish it were longer.

FREEWARE UnFREEz 2.1 (20K) Publisher: WhitSoft Development This is a neat little program. All you need to make animated gifs is a slight artistic ability. Take one image, modify it slightly and save it, modify that one slightly and save it, etc., until you have a series of progressive images. Just like making cartoons. Drag and drop the images into the app. Set the frame delay time. Click the button. And that's it. I made a short cartoon with it in less than an hour. No learning curve.

FREEWARE Javascript Menu Master 1.2 (1.4M) Publisher: Harmony Hollow This program worked easily enough (although you have to follow the help file step by step; it's not at all intuitive). But it did exactly what it said it would. It made a compact java menu in a drop-down box. And it's easy to edit the menu after you're done. But I was looking for something different. The form box is html, which means that if I want to include it on every webpage, I have to copy it to each page or use Server Side Includes. I can't call the javascript as an include, but that probably has nothing to do with this program, but with my lack of coding ability. It's a good program. But I need more.

trepanation I've been following this for a long time now, originally in a piece in a book entitled Our Time, a collection of counterculture articles about the sixties and early seventies, and more recently via this Website. [Check out the guy who drilled a hole in his own head. This is what the original article I read said that a Dutchman named Bart Hughes did.] I'm on this site's mailing list and get a few interesting notices from time to time. They don't dump a lot of mail on you. One e-mail every two or three months or so.
